Harlots & Ruffians bottle talk:

Harlots and Ruffians is a white wine field blend from our vineyard in an open meadow replete with Queen’s Anne’s Lace and red clover.

The name is inspired by a medieval recipe that we like to cook in the winter called an Orange Omelet for Harlots and Ruffians, created by a German chef for an Italian pope in the 1400’s, a cook who shaped recipes for both harlots and prices.

Likewise, we believe this wine is suitable for both ascetics and debauchees, but rest assured it can be enjoyed without risk of moral corruption.

Hand harvested and unfiltered, this wine speaks of our alpine vineyards here in the valleys and hills of Vermont.

JuliusTreis-02~ The Vineyards ~

Our vineyards are about 90% in steep and Steilstlagen. We manage our vineyards in harmony with nature and are you still defenseless. Year after year, we are bursting to unpredictable weather to harvest ripe and healthy grapes. By selektionierte Hand picking in several reading passages we harvest the grapes in ideal ripeness.

The Mullay-Hofberg is our leading position in the every year our best wines grow. Innumerable small terraces and dry-stone walls; a steep slope with about 150m height difference; ungrafted, over 50 years old vines; the orientation to South south-east; the blue slate floor.

All together it makes the editing process Knochenjob which would be impossible without idealism and striving for highest qualities.

Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir are cultivated on slopes and complement our Riesling selection.

JuliusTreis-03~ The History ~

The winery Julius Treis is in Reil on the Moselle and looks back on a long tradition of wine. Since 1684 our family is connected to the viticulture. Each generation loved and
lived viticulture. Today Tobias Treis continues the tradition.

This 5-hectare vineyard has mainly devoted to Riesling. This is grown in the steep and Steilstlagen. The management here is carried out exclusively by hand. A small part of the vineyards in the slopes is additionally fitted with Pinot Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir.

JuliusTreis-04~ Tobias & Andrea ~

Tobias –

Since 2008 Tobias Treis gives the wine its own handwriting. The Studied Dipl. Ing. For oenology continues the high quality struts and the family tradition and supplemented it with new knowledge, passion, idealism and innovative ideas.

In her spare time she is Tobias, since 2011, laid aside organizes events and remains an enthusiastic ambassador for the Mosel wine.

JuliusTreis-05~ Tradition ~

The generations collected knowledge of terroir, peculiarities of vineyards and legendary stories are our little treasures. They are preserved and passed down from generation to generation. This wealth of experience and intuition can be found in our wines again.
So you can taste the origins and fine vintage differences.

Maintaining tradition does not keep ashes but keep embers glowing on.

Éric Chevalier –

kermit-lynch Éric Chevalier is a rising star in the Nantais of the Loire Valley. For ten years, he sourced fruit for a large négociant in the Touraine.  In 2005, he decided to return to his hometown of Saint-Philbert de Grandlieu, just southwest of Nantes, and ended up taking over the family domaine, Domaine de l’Aujardière, the next year. His father, a talented vigneron who did not bottle much of his wines and was well-known as a high-quality source of bulk wine, had stopped working the vineyards and the vines were either going to have to be pulled up and replanted, or sold.  Éric was anything but enthusiastic. Little by little his passion grew, and today he is proud to be the fourth generation to farm the domaine. He is also proud to be bottling more and more of the family’s production himself. Éric sustainably farms twenty-five hectares of vines, producing wines of great character and finesse. He found his future in his family’s past.

The Nantais is a maritime climate, and the vineyards are not far from the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, there is an interesting variety of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, as this area once was ocean floor. Of the twenty-five hectares he farms, a large percentage of his production is dedicated to the production of Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet Côtes de Grand Lieu, mostly from old vines in the superb lieu-dit of La Butte). The soils here are comprised primarily of serpentinite and quartz, with the exception of his ancient granite parcel known as La Noë. The other half of his crop (Chardonnay, Fié Gris, and Pinot Noir, among others) goes towards the production of Vin de Pays du Val du Loire, and the soils are rich in granite, sand, and silt. Of these “country” wines, the most notable is Éric’s Fié Gris. This grape, pulled out of vineyards for many years to be replaced with the more profitable Sauvignon Blanc, is indigenous to the Loire. Also known as Sauvignon Rose or Sauvignon Gris, Éric’s vines are one of the few remaining strongholds of this elegant and luscious varietal. It makes an impression, with almost an Alsatian exoticism.

Appellation Mâcon Protégée

2014  |  12.5% ABV

$13.99  |  750ml

The wines of the Mâconnais region of France are nobody’s idea of a new discovery.  They have always been a reliable source for fresh, crisp, inexpensive whites, and they have remained so.

The wines that used to define the Mâconnais are just a part of a much wider range of styles today, though a large part. This ungainly region in southern Burgundy, where chardonnay is the white grape just as in the Côte d’Or, now produces far more interesting wines than those simple bistro guzzlers.

For almost 20 years, a growing number of Mâconnais producers have been approaching their viticulture and winemaking with a seriousness of purpose once reserved for more-exalted regions. At the same time, celebrated Burgundy producers like Dominique Lafon of Comtes Lafon, the renowned Meursault estate, and Anne-Claude Leflaive of Domaine Leflaive, another top white Burgundy producer, sensed the untapped potential of the region and invested in it. And they are now making excellent Mâconnais wines.

Fruity, light and fresh, an easy wine made in a traditional French countryside style.

As a matter of fact, the term “en vrac” means bring your own bottle. In many French villages locals will bring bottles or jugs to a nearby winery and fill them up with an easy drinking wine to use as their house wine.
