JuliusTreis-02~ The Vineyards ~

Our vineyards are about 90% in steep and Steilstlagen. We manage our vineyards in harmony with nature and are you still defenseless. Year after year, we are bursting to unpredictable weather to harvest ripe and healthy grapes. By selektionierte Hand picking in several reading passages we harvest the grapes in ideal ripeness.

The Mullay-Hofberg is our leading position in the every year our best wines grow. Innumerable small terraces and dry-stone walls; a steep slope with about 150m height difference; ungrafted, over 50 years old vines; the orientation to South south-east; the blue slate floor.

All together it makes the editing process Knochenjob which would be impossible without idealism and striving for highest qualities.

Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir are cultivated on slopes and complement our Riesling selection.

JuliusTreis-03~ The History ~

The winery Julius Treis is in Reil on the Moselle and looks back on a long tradition of wine. Since 1684 our family is connected to the viticulture. Each generation loved and
lived viticulture. Today Tobias Treis continues the tradition.

This 5-hectare vineyard has mainly devoted to Riesling. This is grown in the steep and Steilstlagen. The management here is carried out exclusively by hand. A small part of the vineyards in the slopes is additionally fitted with Pinot Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir.

JuliusTreis-05~ Tradition ~

So you can taste the origins and fine vintage differences.

From www.royalwine.com:

What makes a wine kosher?

A big misconception about kosher wine is that it’s made differently from non-kosher wine or it’s been “blessed” by a Rabbi.  In fact, kosher and non kosher wines are made the same way, it’s just the handling that is a little different.

In order for wine to be kosher it must adhere to the following:

  • A Sabbath-observing Jew to handle the process.
  • Each and every ingredient added, whether in filtration or clarification along the vinification process must be kosher.
All tools and equipment must be dedicated to kosher winemaking alone.
  • Aside from the constraints mentioned above, there needn’t be any difference between the techniques used to make a fine kosher wine or a fine non-kosher wine.

What does mevushal mean?

  • Mevushal is perhaps the most misunderstood term in the kosher wine tradition.
  • In Hebrew, mevushal means literally boiled. However, mevushal wines are not heated to a boiling temperature. Thanks to modern-day technology, mevushal wines are flash-pasteurized to a temperature that meets the requirements of an overseeing rabbi. The technique does not noticeably harm the wine. In fact, flash-pasteurization is used at a number of very well known non-kosher wineries, where it is thought to improve certain aromatics.
  • For Jews, however, the technique simply alters the spiritual quality of a kosher wine, making it less susceptible to ritual proscription. That means anyone—whether kosher or not—can open a bottle of mevushal wine and have it retain its kosher status. Non-mevushal, wines are more sensitive to religious constraints and must be opened and poured only by Sabbath-observant Jews.

Rocca di Frassinello Ornello Maremma Toscana DOC – Outstanding Flavor, Ratings, and Price!

frassinello-ornello-wineI am delighted to highlight Rocca di Frassinello Ornello Maremma Toscana DOC 2012 this week!

My industry friends at
Trattoria Delia
(www.trattoriadelia.com)
rip through this wine
and once you try it,
you’ll know why.

toscana_map_smornello-italian-wineOrnello instantly takes your senses across the Atlantic Ocean and drops them off in the heart Tuscany.

Breathing in aromas of redcurrants, stewed cherries, and vanilla then letting the earthy, almost balsamic like flavors wash over your palate is an exquisite experience.   Ornello is savory and full-bodied, yet round with supple and velvety tannins.

Savoring Ornello by itself is a treat.  Having Ornello with Pappardelle, Bistecca all Fiorentina, other meat dishes, or even cold cuts and ripe cheese is a memorable culinary experience.

ornello-wine-labelAt only $32.99 a bottle, Ornello is an affordable luxury that you can stun your family or friends with at your next gathering.  Ornello punches way above its weight, it is one of the top 10 wines in the store for under $40.

Distributed by my friends at www.calmontbeverage.com, snag a bottle of Ornello and drink it now, with friends, or toss one in the wine cellar and break into it in case of a stunning wine emergency.

Reviews:

2012 Rocca di Frassinello Ornello Maremma Toscana DOC – 90 pts.
Wine Advocate, September 2015
The 2012 Maremma Toscana Ornello is a blend of Sangioveto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. It shows a full and voluptuous style although it is hard to recognize the varietal characteristics given the various contrasting elements of the blend. You get the acidity of Sangiovese with the aromatic softness of both the Merlot and the Syrah backed by the natural structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Ornello may be lost among the vast sea of super Tuscan-inspired reds, but this wine shows very attractive features nonetheless. -Monica Larner

2012 Rocca di Frassinello Ornello Maremma Toscana DOC – 90 pts.
James Suckling, October 2014
“Cigar box, olive tapenade and Kirsch. Fullbodied and robust with chewy tannins, reflective of the hot 2012 vintage. Drink now.” -James Suckling

2012 Rocca di Frassinello Ornello Maremma Toscana DOC – 90 pts.
Wine Spectator, October 2014
“Taut and dense, showing cherry, mushroom, leather and chocolate aromas and flavors. Fresh and complex, with assertive tannins that need time to integrate. Fine length. Best from 2016 through 2023.” -Bruce Sanderson

Éric Chevalier –

kermit-lynch Éric Chevalier is a rising star in the Nantais of the Loire Valley. For ten years, he sourced fruit for a large négociant in the Touraine.  In 2005, he decided to return to his hometown of Saint-Philbert de Grandlieu, just southwest of Nantes, and ended up taking over the family domaine, Domaine de l’Aujardière, the next year. His father, a talented vigneron who did not bottle much of his wines and was well-known as a high-quality source of bulk wine, had stopped working the vineyards and the vines were either going to have to be pulled up and replanted, or sold.  Éric was anything but enthusiastic. Little by little his passion grew, and today he is proud to be the fourth generation to farm the domaine. He is also proud to be bottling more and more of the family’s production himself. Éric sustainably farms twenty-five hectares of vines, producing wines of great character and finesse. He found his future in his family’s past.

The Nantais is a maritime climate, and the vineyards are not far from the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, there is an interesting variety of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, as this area once was ocean floor. Of the twenty-five hectares he farms, a large percentage of his production is dedicated to the production of Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet Côtes de Grand Lieu, mostly from old vines in the superb lieu-dit of La Butte). The soils here are comprised primarily of serpentinite and quartz, with the exception of his ancient granite parcel known as La Noë. The other half of his crop (Chardonnay, Fié Gris, and Pinot Noir, among others) goes towards the production of Vin de Pays du Val du Loire, and the soils are rich in granite, sand, and silt. Of these “country” wines, the most notable is Éric’s Fié Gris. This grape, pulled out of vineyards for many years to be replaced with the more profitable Sauvignon Blanc, is indigenous to the Loire. Also known as Sauvignon Rose or Sauvignon Gris, Éric’s vines are one of the few remaining strongholds of this elegant and luscious varietal. It makes an impression, with almost an Alsatian exoticism.
